Sleep
What is Sleep?
Sleep is a natural and essential state of rest in which the body and mind become inactive and the senses are less responsive to the external environment. During sleep, the brain goes through different stages that help restore energy, repair tissues, strengthen the immune system and support memory and learning. It is a vital process for both physical and mental health. Without enough sleep, the body and brain cannot function properly, leading to problems with concentration, mood and overall well-being. Sleep is as important as food and water for survival.
Importance of Sleep
Sleep is an important but often overlooked part of our life. Sleep is in fact as important as Exercise and Diet. Poor sleep or inadequate sleep in the long run can lead to cardiovascular ailments, cancers, dementia and mental health issues. So it is important to have good sleep hygiene. That is, at least 8 hours of undisturbed sleep is recommended in adolescents and young adults and at least 7 hours of undisturbed sleep is recommended in middle-aged and elderly individuals. Daily exercise and timely food habits help in getting good sleep.
